Send Human Rights Monitors to Zimbabwe
This petition will be sent to: >> AU Chairperson Muammar Gaddafi
Dear [ Decision Maker ] , We write in support of Amnesty International USA's and Physicians for Human Rights' call for the United Nations (UN) and African Union (AU) to send human rights monitors to Zimbabwe. Now is the time for the international community to bolster the fragile unity government between the ZANU-PF and MDC political parties and ensure the safety of human rights defenders. Ensuring respect for human rights is an essential element in supporting the new government, and we urge you to take decisive action to help restore rule of law in Zimbabwe. We are concerned about the role played by Zimbabwe's security forces in silencing perceived political opponents. We are also concerned about the deteriorating economic and social conditions in Zimbabwe that have led to a health crisis unprecedented in both scale and scope having now spread to all neighboring countries. The UN and AU should deploy international monitors to investigate ongoing human rights violations committed by Zimbabwe's security forces during this transitional period. Both AI and PHR have recently documented serious human rights violations including murder, torture, rape, arbitrary arrest, abduction, unlawful detention and inhumane treatment. These violations are politically motivated and may derail the unity government if such egregious acts are allowed to continue. We therefore call on you to support a joint AU-UN human rights monitoring mission to Zimbabwe in an effort to lend international assistance to the new unity government. The lives of 12 million Zimbabweans - and the fate of a country - are at stake.
