Global Day of Action for Doctors Alaei, May 12, 2009

Greetings,

Thank you for your support of Drs. Kamiar and Arash Alaei, Iranian physicians known for their HIV/AIDS work, who have been unjustly imprisoned in Iran since 2008. For updates on their case, see www.iranfreethedocs.org.

More than two years have passed since their arrest, and we need your help again.  At this week’s AIDS Conference in Vienna, four plenary speakers spoke about the Alaeis in speeches that reached tens of thousands of people. Throughout the conference, friends and colleagues of the Alaeis collaborated with PHR to highlight the case within the international AIDS community by passing out thousands of buttons and postcards and talking to media.

We need your help to keep their case alive in the conscience of the world after Vienna. There are two ways you can take action today to help free the Alaeis:

  1. Sign the new petition to President Ahmadinejhad and other Iranian leaders, urging them to release the Alaeis, and tell 6 friends to do the same.
  2. Help get media attention for their case. Vancouver Persian Radio is interviewing Amir A. Fakhravar, Secretary General of the Confederation of Iranian Students, about human rights in Iran tomorrow (Saturday, July 24) at 10 pm Pacific Standard Time. Call in to the show and ask a question about the Alaeis, their case, and scientific freedom in Iran. We want their names mentioned on air—you can help by making a quick call.

Script for your questions:

Hi, I am (your name) from (city, state, country). In June 2008, Iran arrested two well known HIV/AIDS physicians, Drs. Kamiar and Arash Alaei, and accused them of fomenting a velvet revolution. Their evidence? Trips the brothers made to AIDS and public health conferences in the US and world wide. They are still in prison today. How do you see scientific freedom in Iran, which was so grossly violated in this case? How can the international community best support colleagues unjustly imprisoned in Iran?

Thanks for your support,

Sarah Kalloch
Director of Outreach

PS. Sign the petition today, and tell 6 friends to do the same. And consider making the call to Vancouver Persian Radio—getting their names mentioned on air will make a big difference for their case. The more people who call in about the Alaeis, the more likely they will be mentioned—so call in tomorrow, 10 pm PST.
